- Use sunlight to warm your rooms in the winter, and block the sun in the summer to cool your home when possible. Plant a tree, or bushes. Use shades, and curtains wisely... Install storm doors, and check seals at all windows. Lock windows for a better seat. Cover, or remove window mounted A/C units in the winter. Clear space around HVAC vents, registers, and radiators. Install an attic fan.
- Use manual lawn mowers & rakes out doors, and wooden wisks, wooden spoons, carpet sweepers, etc. in doors. Instead of gas, and electric powered units. Wash your clothes in warm, or cold water when possible. Rinse with cold. Clean out the lint trap in the dryer. Dry laundry loads consecutively to maximize dryer efficiency. laundrypure device.
- Install L.E.D. and/or fluorescent lighting in your home and business instead of incandescent bulbs. Use timers, and motion detectors to turn lights off when not in use. Turn the power off to the television, or stereo with an outlet strip, or surge protector. Use Energy Star Rated appliances. Use a programmable thermostat that adjusts the temperature in your home while you sleep, and when you leave for the day. **Do not forget the fluorescent bulbs have MERCURY in them . ***Please, dispose of them properly!
- Seal leaks in ductwork. Insulate your attic properly, and seal light fixture boxes in the attic with caulk. Install a foam gasket under your cover plates of the outlets, and switches located on exterior walls. Insulate any exposed hot water pipes. Insulate ductwork if possible. Wrap your house with a vapor blocking home wrap prior to siding. Caulk your windows, and lock them for a better weather seal. Use felt, or rubber weather strips at home entry doors.
- Use low-flow shower heads, and toilets to save water. You can also recycle your “run off” rain water by re-routing your gutters to barrels or collection points, and irrigate your garden with rain water. Grey water recycling systems can be installed also. These units re-purpose wash water from sinks, tubs, laundry, etc. and store it in an above, or underground tank for re-use.
